Company History

During 1956-1957, Stuart Barr and Jerry Bruce worked as delivery drivers for the Autobody and Paint Supply Company. On April 1, 1958, Stuart and Jerry decided to form a partnership and purchased the company. The company was a wholesale distributor of auto body supplies with sales of $165,000 per year with one branch and three employees. In 1967, Stuart bought out his partner and became the sole owner of what is now Industrial Finishes & Systems, Inc. In the later 1960's, Stuart applied his knowledge of spray-painting equipment to plywood making. At that time, most mills applied glue to veneer with roll coaters. Stuart was determined to spray the glue on to give a more even application. This invention significantly reduced the amount of glue used as well as improved the product quality by reducing the lower grade products and blows and allowed automation. Stuart patented the glue spray system and subsequently formed the Major Machine Division that fabricates glue application machinery for plywood lay-up lines.

Industrial Division

The Industrial Division was created in 1975 in Eugene, Oregon to distribute coated abrasives/sandpaper to plywood and particleboard mills in the Pacific Northwest. It was the second division to be added to Industrial Finishes and Systems, Inc. In the late 1970's and early 1980's, when the major wood products companies expanded operations in the southern states, Industrial Finishes was invited by Norton Abrasives to service the South and Southeast markets. In 1982, Industrial Finishes opened a distribution center in Monroe, Louisiana, and in 1995, a distribution center was opened in Martinsville, Virginia. Today, the Industrial Division is the largest distributor of wide sanding belts in the world for Norton Abrasives. Industrial Finishes has partnered with Norton/Cora and the various plywood, particleboard, and MDF manufacturers for over 25 years. Most recently, the Industrial Division was awarded Norton Company's prestigious "Coated Abrasive Distributor of the Year" award. In addition, we have also partnered with companies like Samuel Strapping, HB Fuller, and Inteplast Group, LTD. to expand our expertise to include packaging, shipping and adhesive products.

Automotive Division

In 1968, Industrial Finishes had the opportunity to open an automotive paint store in Portland, Oregon, followed by another branch in Roseburg, Oregon in the early 1970's. In 1991, the Bend, Oregon store was opened, followed by the acquisition of a store in Gresham and then in Medford, Oregon. On April 1, 1996, the 38th anniversary of the company, the acquisition of Lewis Distributing established a store in Salem, Oregon. On April 1, 1997, again, to celebrate the company's anniversary, Foster A & F Equipment and Paint Division in Portland was acquired. In May 2000, Industrial Finishes acquired two additional paint stores: Bay Center Paint Supply in Coos Bay, Oregon and Full Spectrum Auto Paint & Supply in Vancouver, Washington. On October 1, 2008, Industrial Finishes acquired Barrett Paint Supply in Reno, Nevada. On June 1, 2011, Industrial Finishes acquired Automotive & Industrial Supply (AIS) with three branch locations in Ogden, Orem and Salt Lake City. To date, Industrial Finishes & Systems, Inc. has 19 branch locations across Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Indiana and Mississippi, and is the largest distributor of DuPont and BASF automotive paints in the Northwest. The division also sells PPG automotive paint products and auto body equipment including compressors, spray guns, paint booths, heat exchangers, abrasives and contact glue/exhaust systems.

Recreational Vehicle Division

Industrial Finishes works closely with its R.V. customers to provide training, Just In Time (JIT) inventory, education and product information. Industrial Finishes has full access to BASF's lab facilities. We are the only jobber in the United States with this agreement. The purpose is to have the ability to customize products for our R.V. customers. It gives us the fastest reaction time in the industry.
